Text or document: what this page can redact
Replacing characters works for text you type or paste. Files need a different tool.
| What you have | Can this page redact it? | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Text you type or paste | Yes. Each character is replaced, so the original letters are not in the copied text. | Copy a style above and paste it where you need it. |
| A PDF or Word file | No. | Use the redaction feature of your PDF or document editor, and check that the text underneath is really removed. |
| A screenshot or photo | No. | Cover the area in an image editor and export a flattened copy, so the original pixels are gone. |
| One name inside a longer text | Partly. The whole text is redacted at once. | Paste only the part you want to hide, then put the result back into your sentence. |
Before you paste
This replaces the letters in your text, so the original words are not in the copied result. It cannot redact a PDF, a screenshot or a photo: a black box drawn over a file can leave the text underneath. Use a proper redaction tool for files.

Redacted Text: common questions
What is a redacted text generator?
It replaces the letters in your text with black blocks, stars, dots or a [REDACTED] label so the words cannot be read. Type your text, pick a style and press Copy, then paste the blacked-out version where you need it.
Can the original text be recovered from the blocks?
No. Every letter is replaced, so the copied text does not contain the original. The number of blocks and the spaces still show how long each word was, so a short name can be guessed by its length. Use the [REDACTED] label when length matters.
Can I redact a PDF, screenshot or photo with this?
No. This page only changes text. A black box drawn over a file can leave the words underneath, so use the redaction feature of a PDF or image editor and check the result.
How do I write [REDACTED] in my text?
Open the Redacted label choice above. Every word becomes [REDACTED], which you can paste into a document, post or chat. It gives a classified-document look, or a plain way to hide names.
Is redacted text the same as censored text?
They are close. Redacted text hides words completely, while censored text often keeps the first and last letters. Open Partial and censored for versions like J███ and J**e.
Why do the blocks look different on my phone?
Block characters such as █ are drawn by the font on each device. Some apps leave a thin gap between lines of blocks, and shaded blocks can look lighter or darker. Check the result in the app where you will post it.
