Markdown or Unicode?
Discord turns Markdown into formatting when you send a message. Unicode styled text is already styled when you paste it, so it also works in places that do not read Markdown, such as a name.
| Goal | Markdown in a message | Unicode from this page |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | **Session starts soon** | 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗼𝗻 |
| Italic | *Bring one idea* | 𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑎 |
| Bold italic | ***Final reminder*** | 𝑭𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 |

Which Discord field takes what
| Where | Markdown | Unicode styles | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Message | Yes. Discord formats it when you send. | Yes, as pasted text. | Use Markdown for structure and keep Unicode for a short heading. |
| Display name | No. Names are not formatted. | Yes. Display names can include spaces, special characters and emoji. | Limited to 32 characters. |
| Server nickname | No. | Where the server allows it. | Replaces your display name in that server only. |
| Username | No. | No. Only lowercase Latin letters, numbers, underscores and periods. | Keep it plain. It is how people find you. |
Before you paste
Usernames accept only lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods, so styled text belongs in display names, server nicknames and messages. Discord treats each name field differently, so check the saved result.

Discord Fonts: common questions
Should I use Markdown or Unicode on Discord?
Use Markdown for messages: wrap words in symbols such as ** for bold, and Discord formats them when you send. Use Unicode styles for places Markdown does not format, such as a display name. The tables on this page compare the two.
Can I use a fancy font in my Discord username?
No. Discord restricts usernames to lowercase Latin letters, numbers, underscores and periods. Styled letters are different characters, so they belong in your display name or a server nickname.
How long can a Discord display name be?
Discord limits display names and nicknames to 32 characters. Frames, emoji and spaced letters use that space quickly, so the name choices above show each result's length against 32. Check the saved name in the app.
Why does my styled name look different on some devices?
A styled name is made of characters, not a font file, so each device draws it with the fonts it has. Rare symbols can show as empty boxes on older phones and computers. Check an important name on a second device.
Which font should I use for a Discord name or nickname?
Pick a style that stays readable at member-list size, such as Sans Bold, script or monospace, then copy and paste it into your display name or server nickname. Discord does not install fonts, so these are Unicode letters. A Discord nickname generator is simply a font generator plus a short name: type your name above and compare the results.
Where can I copy symbols for Discord names?
Open the Display name or Gaming nickname choice above and pick a frame such as Star, Heart, Sword or Shield. Those Discord symbols sit around your name as plain characters. For more Discord font symbols, open Text Decorations and copy a symbol from its palette. Discord treats each name field differently, so check the saved result.
Can I copy Discord emoji with this page?
You can copy standard emoji as part of a name style, and Discord display names can include emoji. Custom server emoji are images that belong to a server, not text characters, so a text tool like this cannot copy them. Use Discord's own emoji picker for those.
