Before you paste

Bold here is a set of different characters, not formatting, so search may not match it and screen readers may read it letter by letter. Use it for a heading or a few key words and keep the rest in plain text.

Bold Text: common questions

How do I make text bold where there is no bold button?

Type your text, pick a bold style and press Copy, then paste it where you want it. The pasted letters are different Unicode characters that look bold, so they stay bold in any app that displays them.

What is the difference between bold and sans bold?

Bold has small finishing strokes, like a serif typeface. Sans bold is cleaner and closer to the lettering most apps already use. Try both on your own text, because they read differently at small sizes.

Can I use bold text in a username?

On most platforms, no. Usernames and handles accept only plain letters, numbers and a few symbols, so styled letters are rejected. Use bold in names, bios, captions and posts instead.

Does bold text affect search or accessibility?

A little. Styled letters are different characters from plain ones, so a search for the plain word may not match them, and screen readers may read them as symbols. Keep important words in plain text as well.

Can I make italic text as well as bold?

Yes. Open the Italic choice above to copy italic, bold italic and sans italic letters. They work the same way as bold: different Unicode characters, not formatting, so they paste into bios, posts and messages that have no italic button.
